Local Crafts and Our Economy

As you stroll through the Farmers Market, filling your basket with the bounty of local farms, don’t overlook the opportunity to support local craftspeople and artisans.

The concept of “Go Local” doesn’t end with ingredients for salads. Handcrafted items provide the same satisfaction as fresh-off-the-vine tomatoes; purchasing them strengthens another level of a local, sustainable economy.

Keeping production close to home, whether on a small farm or in a home-based workshop, conserves resources and fosters a healthy network of self-sufficient exchange. Many North Country craftspeople and artisans use locally-available materials in their work. The long list of possibilities includes balsam pillows, turned wooden bowls, herbals wreaths, felted wool slippers, and bees-wax candles. Like farmers, artisans respond to market demand. The more shoppers ask for and purchase these kinds of products, the more options become available.
